Welcome! You’re new here…I know that because, as it turns out, I’m new here too. About 6 months ago, I wrote 3 super secret planning posts. They were the “maybe, possibly, never going to be posted” kind of posts. And now, 6 months later, I have the hindsight of being able to know that everything I thought I was planning for (and writing about) in November, is in fact, not actually happening…YET. Or maybe ever…in exactly the way I thought it was going to. So here’s the deal; back in November, I thought my husband and I were going to sell our house, buy a sailboat, and cruise off into the sunset for an unknown quantity of time to explore the world with our 4 children (ages 3, 5, 7, and 9), whom I homeschool.
We took sailing lessons with our 2 oldest kids, which was awesome! They are great sailors! And I started cleaning out my house (well, actually, I only made it through one closet) while we searched for our new home on the water.
But, we quickly realized finding the right boat is going to take a LOT longer than 6 months. And, we need more time to learn to sail. Sooooo, I never published those old posts. Maybe I will, just for laughs, because you know, it’s always funny to revisit things when they don’t go exactly like you think they will.
So what this all means spelled out a little more clearly, is that our family is taking a huge road trip this summer!
As much as we wanted to plan and sail, there was another plan for this season of our lives, and it involves a different form of travel. Corey and I have both wanted to travel to Alaska for as long as we’ve known each other, and we’ve “almost” made the trip on several occasions, but other things always came up. The closest we came to making the trip was the summer of 2014, and we had planned a road trip with the kids and set the dates on the calendar. I bought all the guide books and had my mind set on 3 weeks of Alaskan beauty, but several things came up at the very last minute that caused us to have to cancel our plans. I was heart-broken….like, SO, SO sad. I couldn’t even think about going camping for almost 2 months after that, I was so sad. (Ok folks, in our house, 2 months without camping is like a day without coffee in your house!) When I could finally bring myself to consider going somewhere else, we ended up taking this awesome trip to Lassen National Park, Hat Creek, and Burney Falls in Northern California, my old summer stompin’ grounds!
But still, the Alaska plan was forming, (although we couldn’t see the pieces all at once) and it was better than I imagined! And now, in 2015, instead of going to Alaska for 3 weeks, we’re going to Alaska for 3 months!! Corey will be able to work remotely while we travel, which is amazing and more than we could have asked for. So what this all means spelled out a little more clearly, is that our family is taking a huge road trip this summer! We’ll be leaving California in mid-May and driving all the way up to Alaska, where we’ll spend the entire summer exploring everything we can explore before moseying home in late August, taking our time to explore some of Canada.
Yep, it’s 2,483 miles from Patterson, CA (our home) to Tok, Alaska. I’m so grateful for the road trip stash that my MOPS leadership team gave me to help us survive! I figure if we can make it through a summer traveling in a 6-seat truck and 25 foot travel-trailer, we’ll make it in a 35-foot sailboat in the future, so no matter what comes next, we’ll be ready! Corey and I are super excited about all that the summer might hold for us. So come back and check in often. We’ll let you know where we are, what we’re seeing, and if we’ve stayed someplace awesome! Plus, I promise to post as many pictures as I can, and to let you glimpse pieces of our crazy…you know….just to keep it real.
